Creative Classroom Grant Recipients 2011

 

Over $17,000 will be awarded to ten MCPS educators from six schools, helping to ensure the educational achievement of more than 1,800 students.

 

 

Sentinel High School

Amount Awarded: $ 2,300

Number of Students to be Served: 350

Project Title: Designing for the Future: Alternative Energy

 

“In this project Industrial Arts students will design and construct a portable weather and energy data collection trailer which will be used by Earth Science students to evaluate locations in and around Missoula for their wind and solar energy potential.” – Craig Messerman

 

Big Sky High School

Amount Awarded: $2,050

Number of Students to be Served: 30+

Project Title:  Datsun 260 Z Restoration & Race Project

“Students in the MCPS Auto Class are rebuilding a 1976 260Z.. With good attendance, participation and grades these students will be able to sit behind the wheel at Sports Car Club of America sanctioned races. Montana Automotive Technologies, Missoula Education Foundation and local businesses will be providing expertise and donated parts. “- Thomas Leik

 

Paxson Elementary

Amount Awarded:  $2,200

Number of Students to be Served: 400+

Project Title: Community Collaboration Sparking Local and Global Awareness Through Arts Education

“A school-wide pilot program in which community artists work with every student to develop an appreciation of where they are in place and time through study of local, national, and global issues. Students will delve into art and discover its importance, thereby learning more about themselves and their community. “ – Claudia LaRance

 

Rattlesnake Elementary School

Amount Awarded : $1,000

Number of Students to be Served: 400+

Project Title: Outdoor Education Advocate

 “…I want to support classroom teachers in developing place-based, outdoor learning opportunities for grade level units to be taught, aligned with state and MCPS standards and benchmarks. Resources request in this grant would be available for teacher check out, allowing students to collect significant data, research findings, develop observation skills and stewardship. “ – Catherine Schuck

 

Big Sky High School

Amount Awarded: $2,350

Number of Students to be Served: 75+

Project Title: Music in Me

“Music in Me is a high school laboratory that inspires musical exploration and personal expression through music composition. Using specialized technology students can record the simplest tune to the most complex of orchestrations. The program then translates the notes to sheet music, unleashing a student’s musical creation from the imagination.” – Nancy Labbe

 

C.S. Porter Middle School

Amount Awarded:  $900

Number of Students to be Served: 50+

Project Title: Listen and Read!

“Listen & Read! will provide students access to auditory books at or above their reading level. This approach to reading helps students learn new vocabulary, increase reading fluency and understanding. As well as provide students with lower reading skills an avenue to participate in classroom based reading (novel sets) where they would have had limited participation in the past.” – Tyra McDonald

 

Sentinel High School

Amount Awarded: $2,500

Number of Students to be Served: 20+

Project Title: Selway Sojourn

“The goal for the Selway Sojourn is to offer a leadership camp where we extend our study of two memoirs, “Indian Creek Chronicles” by Pete Fromm and “The Surrounded” by Darcy McNickle. Both have had a strong impact on our views of historical literature and the environment.” –Cheryl Hughes

 

Meadow Hill Middle School

Amount Awarded: $810

Number of Students to be Served: 462

Project Title: Lights, Camera, Action at Meadow Hill!

“This grant is intended to fund a media lab at C.S. Porter. This lab will be used by all students in all content areas. The lab will provide space and equipment for students to capture, edit, and produce final products for project based units.” – Kasey Dirnberger

 

MCPS Basic Education

Amount Awarded: $1,000

Number of Students to be Served: 50 +

Project Title: Kindling: Building a Fire of Fluency, Vocabulary, Workspace Skills and Engagement

“The Kindle helps low level readers improve their fluency and readers of all levels including those learning English improve their vocabulary. In addition, youth are drawn to this medium. In classrooms where they are expected to be self motivated and work independently this option will help engage them in learning. “ – Renee Bentham

 

C.S. Porter Middle School

Amount Awarded :  $2,000

Project Title: Engagement Through iPad Touch

“The requested iPads will be used in an intensive Lie Skills program. The iPads will be used for students who require instruction in cause and effect, reasoning skills, communications, language arts, math and reasoning skills. Using an iPad would allow students access to technology who would otherwise missed out. “ – Marie Craton
